Four Committee roles open for application

This year we have four committee roles open for application, to be confirmed at our AGM in September. For an informal chat about any of these roles please do get in touch with Sophie or anyone from the committee. As a research group we are keen to reflect the diversity of our community and we encourage anyone researching in the sub-discipline to apply.


Chair (3 year term)

  • Offer strategic oversight and leadership for the committee, activities and the group

  • Responsibility across the portfolio of activities to ensure the group is working in line with the RGS-IBG constitution

  • Chairing the AGM and working with the Research Group Secretary to produce meeting agendas, agree minutes, and communicate effectively with the RGS-IBG, GCYFRG committee, and membership

  • Contributing to the Annual Report and other central RGS-IBG processes as required, including co-ordinating Research Group nominations to RGS-IBG calls i.e. REF panel nominations, Medals & Awards

  • Chair committee meetings throughout the year (typically two per semester)

  • Ensuring the Research Group complies with GDPR regulations as advised by the RGS-IBG

  • Attending Research Group Committee meetings and other events (2-3 times per year, online)

  • Promote the activities of the research group widely

  • To offer support and direction for members of the committee and those who are affiliated to our group

  • The Chair must be a RGS- IBG Fellow

  • For the Chair role, the applicant would need to be an established researcher in the field.

Early Career Officer (3 year term)

  • Promoting early career interests within the wider Research Group

  • Lead initiatives related to the support and development of early career scholars in our field

  • Support with wider Research Group initiatives (such as Dissertation Prize marking)

  • Attend committee meetings (typically two per semester)

Mentor Officer (3 year term)

  • Provide leadership with the new mentoring initiative which was piloted in 2022/23

  • Encourage the participation of mentors and mentees with the programme

  • Provide support during the mentorship timeframe

  • Run the programme annually / or biannually (to be decided)

  • To engage with the RGS-IBG with their commitment to mentoring (attend meetings, sharing ideas and expertise)

  • Support with wider Research Group initiatives (such as Dissertation Prize marking)

  • Attend committee meetings (typically two per semester)


Postgraduate Officer (1 year term)

  • Promoting postgraduate interests and the needs of the wider Research Group

  • Leading the Researcher in the Spotlight initiative

  • Maintaining connection with the wider postgraduate community through the Postgraduate Forum and potential blog posts

  • Advocating for the wider postgraduate community

  • Support with wider Research Group initiatives (such as marking an undergraduate dissertation as part of our annual prize)

  • Attend committee meetings (typically two per semester)


Application process:

  • Please send us your expression of interest via email (no more than 150 words) on why you would like the role and what you could offer the GCYFRG.

  • Each application needs to be nominated by another colleague who knows you and your work. They will need to send us a statement of 100 words by the closing date, please ask them to do this.

  • The roles will be confirmed at the AGM in September (date to be confirmed)
