Available GCYFRG Committee positions

At the 2022 AGM the following posts will be available:

  • Treasurer

  • Workshop Officer (Writing retreat)

  • Ordinary Committee Member (x2)

  • Postgraduate Officer


As a research group, we are keen to reflect the diversity of our community and we encourage anyone researching in the sub-discipline to apply for any of the roles.

Further information about each post is below.

Treasurer (3 year post)

  • Handle routine financial transactions of the research group

  • Oversee the technicalities of maintaining the group’s bank account;

  • Produce annual statements and other finance-related documents for the RGS-IBG;

  • Assist other committee members with the planning of events and initiatives;

  • Contribute to other research group activities as relevant;

  • As required, represent GCYFRG at RGS-IBG meetings, e.g. annual Research Group Forum, twice-annual Research Group Sub-Committee.

  • Support with Research Group initiatives

Workshop Officer (Writing retreat)

  • Organise the annual GCYFRG writing retreat

  • Liaise with GCYFRG treasurer regarding budget, fees, etc.

  • Work with other GCYFRG committee members (usually Chair and Treasurer) on applications for RGS funding to support PGR bursaries

  • Advertise places at the retreat via listservs

  • Keep detailed records of applications/participants (e.g. payment status, dietary requirements)

  • Coordinate the programme for the week

  • Prompt participants to coordinate travel (and to an extent play a role in assisting with logistics, e.g. help organise lift shares/pick-ups from train station)

  • Coordinate food for the week

  • Support with Research Group initiatives


Postgraduate Officer (1-year post)

  • Promoting postgraduate interests and the needs of the wider Research Group

  • Leading the Researcher in the Spotlight initiative

  • Maintaining connection with the wider postgraduate community through the Postgraduate Forum and potential blog posts

  • Support with Research Group initiatives


Ordinary Committee Member (3 year post)

  • General support to office bearers

  • Promoting/championing the role of GCYFRG in wider academy/geographical circles

  • Appraising one undergraduate dissertation for the annual GCYFRG prize

  • Support with Research Group initiatives
