Research Projects

1.     Current Research

Shamima is a PhD student in the Centre for Global Development at Northumbria University working on research entitled “Voluntary Labour in the Climate Emergency: Exploring the Experiences of Youth Volunteers in the Context of Climate-Vulnerable Bengal Delta”.

Shamima’s research explores the roles of youth volunteers in climate emergencies in the Bengal Delta in South Asia. This delta is repeatedly affected by disasters and ongoing climate impacts. Despite inclusion in diverse policy objectives and ambitions, young volunteers’ lived experiences, voices and practices are absent from popular, scholarly and policy thinking. Therefore, this research aims to explore the everyday life experiences of those marginal youth volunteers amongst climate-vulnerable communities in Bangladesh. This research adopts participatory research approaches to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in the coastal communities to generate new knowledge that will contribute to both volunteer and climate change domains separately and combinedly.

2.     Other / Previous Research

Shamima has completed an MSc in Climate Studies, from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, an MA in Disaster Management, from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and a BSc in Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline, from Khulna University, Bangladesh. Her research work has included:

  1. Exploring adaptation pathways for water use under changing climate and complex social system- A study on water users in the Southwestern coastal part (Satkhira) of Bangladesh (MSc in Climate studies thesis, Wageningen University).

  2. Adaptation to Climate Change and New Agricultural Practices: A Study in Ramchandrapur Village of Satkhira District (MS in Disaster Management thesis)

  3. To Study the Household Resources Management in Charlands of Golachipa (Patuakhali) of Bangladesh (PGD in Disaster Management thesis).
