Research Projects

1. Current Research

I am an assistant professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, developing children's geographies in Poland. Currently, I am working on young people's independent mobility and spaces and places of their activities. I try to enrich the geographical perspective with sociological and psychological themes in my work. I am open to any form of cooperation.

A. The relationship between young people and their suburban neighborhoods in the context of independent mobility

Contemporary times provide numerous challenges related to dynamic changes in how children and young people experience their local environment. Young people's independent mobility is key in shaping their spatial experiences. The decline in levels of independent mobility observed in recent years, especially in developed countries, together with the impact of pandemics on daily life, calls for a deeper understanding of this issue. Therefore, research in this area should focus, on the one hand, on the identification of the level of independent mobility of young people and its potential changes, and, on the other hand, on the places and spaces sought by these people for their daily activities. The research-confirmed impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the independent mobility of young people makes it an essential context for further research in this area in the near future. In addition, the large disparity between urban and non-urban studies urges greater attention to suburban areas in this regard.

B.  I am also interested in the ways in which refugee children find themselves and identify with their new places of residence.

2. Other / Previous Research

The presence of young people in the development strategies of Polish district cities

City development strategies (CDS) are documents that are widely used in cities around the world, reflecting the intentions of municipal governments regarding urban development. They often have a direct impact on the urban user's lives. One of the largest groups of urban users is young people (under 25). In Europe, they make up about 25% of the population. According to a UN report, urban areas will be home to 60% of the world's population in 2030. The assessment of CDS provisions, therefore, becomes relevant from the perspective of young people and should be the starting point for discussions about future documents to meet the needs and expectations of young people.

The main objective of the research was to identify provisions concerning young people in the development strategies of Polish district cities. A total of 66 documents were analysed using the content analysis method. Twelve thematic categories of provisions relating to young people were identified, through the prism of which the distribution and differentiation of these topics in the structure of CDS and the activities for young people proposed in these documents were analysed. The ways in which young people participated in the creation of the CDS were also examined.
